Property SummaryThis historic row of cottages in the tiny hamlet of Bowlish, Nr Shepton Mallet, has a real sense of friendly community and no.12 is at its heart. It is a charming, light and comfortable home, with double glazing throughout and gas fired central heating. The front door opens into a cosy and welcoming sitting room, with built in shelving for books and treasures and a gas fire. Another room to the front of the cottage, with its original, stripped floorboards, makes a perfect study. The kitchen-dining room is the hub of the house with a wood burning stove in the fireplace and plenty of room for a large dining table. It is fitted with cream cabinets, complementing a quarry tiled floor, a built-in oven and hob and integrated dishwasher. A pretty trio of windows look out to the garden and another tall window lets in lots of light. A doorway leads through to a rear lobby which makes an ideal boot/utility area, with a door to the garden. There is a downstairs shower room here too.
Stairs leading up from the sitting room take you to a central landing with further steps either side. On one side is a beautiful bathroom with a roll-top bath and separate shower, and tall windows maximising the natural light. On the other side are two pretty and light double bedrooms. A second staircase then leads up to a very spacious dressing area and master bedroom. The dressing area has built-in wardrobes and a Velux window and this generous space offers potential for an additional shower room. A doorway leads through to a light and sunny master bedroom in the eaves.
At the rear of the cottage is a delightful cottage garden, on several levels, with two areas of immaculate lawn surrounded by borders packed with cottage flowers and plants and a lovely Acer tree. A path runs up the side to the top where there is a charming wooden studio, flooded with light from large windows on two sides, and a substantial shed and wood store. The garden is dotted with little terraces, perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee or glass of wine. A shared pathway runs along the back of the row of cottages, leading out to the front.
12 Bowlish is in a row of period cottages set amongst a cluster of other historic cottages and elegant houses on a quiet lane with very little through traffic. Bowlish itself is a small hamlet with a rich history dating back to the French Huguenots in the early 1700s. There is a good pub within walking distance and wonderful opportunities for dog walking on the surrounding Mendip hills. Local shopping, supermarkets including Waitrose and Tesco, and other amenities can be found in the historic city of Wells just 5 miles away. Shepton Mallet offers all the usual opportunities of a thriving market town. Transport links are good with Castle Cary railway station just 15 minutes drive away, and the A303 (with direct access to London and the South West) 20 minutes drive.
Local schools include St Paul’s in Shepton Mallet, Wells Blue School and Ansford Academy in Castle Cary. Local independent schools are excellent and include All Hallows prep school, Downside School, the Bruton Schools, Wells Cathedral School and Millfield.
From the Tesco roundabout in the centre of Shepton Mallet take the A371 towards Wells. At the mini roundabout take the first exit towards Wells. After a short distance turn right into Forum lane (very narrow). 12 Bowlish will be found in the row of cottages on the left hand side.
