Property Summary
Bakewell House in Alhampton (near Castle cary and Bruton) is an intrinsically beautiful, period country house in need of some sympathetic refurbishment to restore it to its former glory. Set back from a quiet no-through road that meanders through the village, this property is a perfect English family home, beautifully constructed of red brick, and set entirely within its own land and gardens. Dating from 1754, the original house has been extended and added to over the years and retains many period features evident throughout the house. This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire an unusually pretty house in a premium village and create a truly wonderful family home.
A pretty gravelled drive sweeps up the West side of the house and opens to a large parking area to the rear. A small gate in the front wall opens to a path that leads to the front door beneath a porchway. Off the hall are a generous sized sitting room and a family room, both with elegant paned glass Georgian windows that make the most of the natural light from the South. The sitting room is warmed by an attractive wood burner set within a recessed fireplace and overlooking some fine wood floors whilst the family room features an original Victorian fireplace. Also leading from the hall is a very spacious kitchen at the heart of the house. This comes with a two oven aga, integrated oven and microwave, Belfast sink, doors that lead to a small exterior utility area, and ample room for a dining area. Off the kitchen is a small dining room and cloakroom with WC.
Stairs lead upstairs to a small landing and five spacious, well-proportioned bedrooms, two with en-suite bathrooms and a family bathroom. All have beautiful views of the gardens and the countryside beyond
Outside
The gardens are beautiful, surrounded by a canopy of mature trees, and mostly laid to lawn. A variety of fruit trees enrich a landscape that opens out at the rear of the house and extends significantly to the East- a magnificent, 700 sq. ft. barn adorns the back of the house, offering potential for development given the relevant planning permissions. A gravelled area provides parking for several cars.
Situation
Alhampton is a picturesque and popular village with its own pub, the Alhampton Inn. The neighbouring village of Ditcheat is widely known as home to Paul Nicholls’s racing stables and Barbers farmhouse cheese. It has a good farm shop; an excellent primary school and its own excellent pub, The Manor Inn. Transport links are superb with Castle Cary’s mainline railway station to London and the South West just a few minutes’ drive away. Local shopping can be found in Castle Cary, Bruton (home to the now famous Hauser and Wirth gallery and “At the Chapel” restaurant), Shepton Mallet and Wincanton. The recently opened Emily Estate is a fabulous addition to the area.
Local independent schools include All Hallows and Hazelgrove, Millfield, Sunny Hill Girls school and Kings Bruton. Excellent state schools include Ansford Academy, Sexeys Bruton and the Blue school in Wells.
