Nestled discreetly on the edge of Dilton Marsh and minutes from the Somerset/Wiltshire border, Coldstream Villa is a fabulous six bed family house with stunning views of the countryside that surrounds it. Originally part of the Chalcot estate, this lovely period home is situated entirely within its own land and affords complete privacy to its owners. The property dates from 1850 and has been updated over the years to include a magnificent indoor heated pool (12m x 5m) that was added in 2009.
The house is approached via gates and a pretty private drive that culminates in an attractive gravelled parking area to the East. The front door opens into a comfortable hall with fitted cupboards and a beautiful, solid oak floor under foot. This in turn leads to the two primary reception rooms, one warmed by an open fire and the other by an appealing wood burning stove. Both rooms have lovely views of the gardens beyond and again, solid oak floors underfoot. At the heart of the house is a magnificent 25ft kitchen/diner that features an array of fitted units with oak panels, Corian work surfaces, a double sink unit, integrated appliances and recessed lighting. French doors from the dining area lead directly to a pretty South facing terrace that runs along the front of the house. A pretty island sits atop a beautiful terracotta floor and a four oven aga lends a touch of luxury.
At the far end of the house is a fabulous family room finished with an elegant brick fireplace with natural oak surround, fitted built in shelving and a solid oak floor. A set of French doors lead directly to the pretty terraces outside and allow natural light to pour into the room.
The ground floor is also furnished with a cloakroom, a boot room, and a utility room.
A flight of stairs leads to a fine, principal bedroom suite replete with en-suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. Five further bedrooms, a home office and two family bathrooms complete the picture. All the bathrooms are well equipped with high end fixtures and fittings and heated towel rails whilst the bedrooms and office all have delightful views of the gardens.
To the South of the house, magnificent manicured lawns sweep away to a boundary framed by a classic post and rail fence. Beyond the fence to the East lies a pretty stream that meanders beneath a canopy of mature trees and is the perfect idyll for a summer picnic. A stylish terrace runs along the length of the house beneath a stunning wisteria and allows uninterrupted views of the glorious countryside – this is the perfect spot for summer entertaining on a grand scale. The Black Dog woods (owned by the Longleat estate) lie to the North of the house and are well known for its charming footpaths. An oversized internal double garage with oversized doors will accommodate two large vehicles and has direct access to the house.
The 12m indoor pool was added in 2009 and is truly stunning. It is heated via an air source heat pump and designed such that natural light pours in through expansive, oversized windows - glazed doors open fully to allow this space to interact seamlessly with the gardens. It comes with a wet room and a cloakroom.
Coldstream Villa is ideally situated on a quiet no through road on the outskirts of Dilton Marsh, one of the most charming villages in Wiltshire. Village life is vibrant and there is a tangible sense of community spirit – there is a pub, the Prince of Wales, a post office, grocery shop, fish & chip shop and farm shop/garden centre & café and a good primary school. Three miles to the West is Frome, one of Somerset’s most fashionable market towns and recently featured in the Sunday Times as the best place to live in Somerset. The town has a comprehensive choice of retail outlets and all the usual amenities. Founded in 2013, the “Frome Independent” is an award-winning independent street market that is held on the first Sunday of every month and attracts 80,000 people a year. Other local attractions include Babington House, Soho House’s country mansion, Stourhead Gardens and the Longleat Estate. The most famous landmark of the area is the vastly impressive Westbury White Horse which is both the oldest and largest White Horse in Wiltshire.
Transport links are excellent with Westbury’s mainline railway station just 8 minutes away and providing links to London (within 1 hour 26 minutes), Wales and the whole of the South west of England. The A303 with direct access to London and the South West is a 20 minute drive.
The area is well served by excellent local and independent schools in Wiltshire, Somerset and Bath.
From the A303, take the A350 North towards Blandford, Warminster and Longleat. After 6.5 miles at the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto A36. After 1.3 miles, at the roundabout take the 2nd exit and stay on the A36. After 1.6 miles take the 1st exit and stay on the A36. After 3.5 miles turn right onto the B3099 for approx. 1 mile – turn right onto Clearwood and where Clearwood and Stormore meet at the bend turn into the lane beside woods – the house is on the left hand side after approx. 300m.
