Property SummaryThornreed House
The front entrance from the road is discreet and unassuming. Once inside however this beautiful Georgian, former Gentleman Farmer’s residence, is an absolute delight. The entrance hall is spacious with a welcoming, traditional feel. A particular feature here are the exceptionally large reclaimed flag stones, believed to have originated from Glastonbury Abbey and the décor and style throughout is impeccable. From the attractive well-established garden the traditional Georgian rear elevation is an elegant and charming surprise. On entering from here, the super stylish open plan design of the interior is again striking and with an element of fun too. Artistic endeavour, a wealth of creativity and the use of reclaimed materials all take their place here and are woven beautifully into the fabric of this house. Traditional features combine immaculately with the individually crafted details - all complemented by the views of Somerset and its changing light to the front and rear.
Shuttered sash windows, the beautiful expansive flagstone floors and a superb marble fireplace inset with wood burning stove lead the traditional features, while a cleverly placed contemporary curved wall fitted with copper doors on one side and Elle Décor award winning tiles on the other, allow for rooms downstairs to flow together or be separate from the entrance hall. Copper accents and beautiful colour palettes work their magic in each room setting a perfect tone.
Through an elegant arch from the living room the kitchen is perfectly placed with a shuttered sash window looking out toward the Mendip Hills. Clean lines, traditional styling and a dash of retro define this space and there are clever additions here such as the microwave, fridge and wine rack being fitted into the original inglenook. It has everything that you might need and is the perfect place to cook and chat with those around you.
On the first floor there are two well-appointed, spacious and light en-suite double rooms with facilities cleverly concealed behind sliding doors. A gorgeous double aspect room features a claw foot free-standing bath with exposed copper pipes, the other has a window to the south facing garden and features a retro white tiled wet room with rubber flooring. Painted floorboards and wonderful design delights and inspires. On the second floor a third en-suite bedroom spans the top floor of the house and is wonderfully spacious reaching into the apex of the roof. Exposed lime washed timbers and painted floorboards lend this room an almost nautical feel, it would make a perfect children’s room or guest suite. Practicalities are well catered for here too with a large useful storage area as well as the efficient, modern boiler system that provides for the hot water and heating.
Thornreed House has been very successfully let as a short break and holiday destination for the last four years. During this time the current owners have built an excellent reputation. The property is currently registered with Sawdays amongst others and has been widely covered in the media by publications including The Sunday Times and Homes and Antiques. Much of the unique furniture and beautiful Artwork housed here is available for sale by separate negotiation. The property is for sale either with vacant possession or as an on-going concern.
The pretty and peaceful south facing garden wends its way down to the River Sheppey. There are established trees, shrubs and borders to be found here. The area immediately adjacent to the house provides the perfect spot for alfresco dining.
This very desirable village has a vibrant community with a popular local pub, tea rooms, artisan bakery, Godney Aquaponics delivering fresh vegetables to your door and with many social activities taking place around the village hall. The Sheppey Inn is a destination pub due to its excellent menu and fun filled atmosphere. There are many wonderful walks along the bridle ways and footpaths which are home to a plethora of wildlife including swans, barn owls, kingfishers as well as deer and herons.
Perfectly situated; Godney lies between Wells, Glastonbury and Wedmore, with the small City of Wells offering a wealth of culture and varied societies. There are busy, vibrant markets twice a week and several supermarkets including Waitrose and Tescos. All the usual amenities that you would expect can be found in Wells including banks, doctors surgeries, dentists and a selection of primary schools with the excellent Blue School in the secondary sector plus Wells Cathedral school. The high street is vibrant with a small selection of the usual chain stores plus a variety of independent shops and restaurants. At the very heart of the city is the medieval Cathedral, Bishops Palace and Vicars Close, reputed to be the oldest surviving residential street in Europe.
The Wells Festivals are increasing in popularity each year with the Literary Festival now taking place over two weeks and attracting big names in the literary world, the very well attended Food Festival and many regular Arts festivals. With both the Cathedral School and the Cathedral itself there are endless opportunities for musical concerts, plus regular shows and comedy nights in the Little Theatre.
Glastonbury also offers weekly markets, supermarkets, a small hospital and plenty of independent shopping. The larger cities of Bath, Bristol, Taunton and Yeovil are within commuting distance. The train stations at Castle Cary and Highbridge offer fast, direct lines to London.
Twenty minutes away is the very fashionable small town of Bruton which has the very popular restaurant/coffee/bread shop called At the Chapel and the world famous Hauser and Wirth Art Gallery.
There are Golf Clubs in Wells and on the Mendips, as well as sailing and fishing which can be found on the Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes.
The property is within the catchment area of The Blue School in Wells and also within easy reach of excellent private schools; Wells Cathedral School and Millfield. The neighbouring villages of Coxley, Meare and Wookey offer good primary schools and Millfield has its own prep school.
