Langford Farm House is a wonderful Grade II listed family home, dating back to the 1800s. This handsome house stands proudly in the heart of the popular village of Alhampton and is brimming with original features and relics preserved from bygone days when this resplendent home was a farm producing Somerset cheese and cider.
The property is accessed via a wrought iron gate set within a low stone wall with pretty steps leading to a porch way surrounding a splendid wooden door embellished with iron studwork. The entrance hall leads into four reception rooms with large original flagstones throughout, wonderful fireplaces, oak beams and views of the surrounding gardens. Remaining original cheese hooks pepper the ceilings as a reminder of the history of this special dwelling. The heart of the home is an impressive kitchen with a double vaulted ceiling featuring overhead beams with large inset windows ensuring natural daylight to flood the entire space.
Upstairs are five generous bedrooms, two with en-suite, all with plenty of storage, original beam work and views over the gardens with a separate family bathroom. A teenage haven or parent sanctuary can be found ascending from a dressing room into the attic space occupying the entire length of the property.
The gardens are laid to a mixture of lawn, gravelled pathways and wonderfully stocked boarders with an abundance of shrubs and flowering plants to include a rose garden and a mature parterre. A feature of the property is the 100-year-old espaliered Pear tree as well as a number of red-fruited cider apple trees.
The original farm driveway is accessed through double gates with parking for numerous cars.
Brick and stone outbuildings provide garaging, stables and separate barn currently used as studio/workshop which could, subject to planning consent, be converted into further accommodation.
This property possesses an extra acre of land which is accessed from the opposite side of the lane. This flat piece of ground is a fabulous space for outdoor pursuits, camping or summer parties within completely private surroundings. Note – this land is subject to a separate negotiation.
The pretty village of Alhampton is a friendly community with its own pub, the Alhampton Inn. The neighbouring village of Ditcheat is widely known as home to Paul Nicholls’s racing stables and Barber’s farmhouse cheese. It has an excellent farm shop, primary school and The Manor Inn pub. Castle Cary, 2.5 miles south, is a bustling town with many attractive and historic buildings including its 19th century Market house and the 18th century Roundhouse. The main street offers an assortment of individual shops, cafes, restaurants and delicatessens. Market day falls on a Tuesday where fish, organic vegetables and homemade breads are sold on the cobbles in front of the Market House. The Newt in Somerset has recently opened nearby. A recent article in the Telegraph quoted 'The Newt is one of the most exceptional country house hotels Britain has seen'. The gardens are open to the public and visitors are welcome to walk through amazing woodland gardens and to dine in the restaurants and cafes.
Large supermarkets are located in the towns of Wincanton and Shepton Mallet which are both a short drive away and the fashionable town of Bruton is also very close by. Bruton is a popular town in the heart of the Somerset countryside. It has several well-known restaurants, pubs and bars including “At the Chapel” and “The Roth Bar” at the world-renowned Hauser & Wirth Gallery. Both Castle Cary and Bruton also offer a doctors’ surgery, pharmacy, vet, post office, several mini supermarkets, fuel station and numerous independent shops. For further shopping and recreational activities Frome, Bath, Bristol, Wells, Salisbury and Wells are all within easy driving distance.
The neighbouring village of Ditcheat has a primary school and Ansford secondary school is situated in Castle Cary. There are excellent local independent schools nearby including Millfield School, King’s School Bruton, Bruton School for Girls and also the state-owned day and boarding school - Sexey's.
