Property SummaryCourt Lodge, Butleigh offers a chance to purchase a piece of Butleigh history. Court Lodge as you would expect was the gate house to Butleigh Court, dating back to 1845 and on the edge of the park with views of Butleigh Court and its cricket pitch along with being situated in this much sought after village.
This lovely family house is full of character and offers plenty of spacious accommodation.
The front door is protected by a very pretty stone porch and leads into the hallway from where there is access to the snug, dining room and kitchen. The current owners have installed a two sided log burner which heats the heart of the house and the dining room.
The kitchen is of a generous size in a farmhouse style and clearly is a well lived in family space, cooking is via a large gas range. Off the kitchen there is the garden room with double doors to the garden but also an office and ground floor bathroom. These three rooms could easily be used as a self contained annexe or incorporated into the kitchen to create a large open plan family living space.
A lovely cosy snug with twin aspect mullion windows and an original stone mantle from Butleigh Court is a great room to relax in whilst the large dining room is ideal for entertaining and faces the parkland behind the house. The dining room leads into the drawing room, this magnificent double height room with its two huge curved stone windows has been created from the original entrance to the Court. Years ago the drive to the court went through these arches, which are now windows, and were therefore of sufficient size to allow carriages to pass through.
Two staircases from the hall take you upstairs, the first to two bedrooms and a bathroom, these could easily be used for B&B should generating some income be of interest or perhaps some members of the family might like to have a little bit of independence.
The second staircase goes to a half landing with the master bedroom and en-suite and then up further to two bedrooms and another bathroom. The bedrooms at the back of the house have stunning views of the park, cricket pitch and countryside beyond.
Outside is a wonderful old granary sat upon staddle stones, currently used for storage but it could easily make a wonderful office or garden room. There is a secondary brick building which could possibly offer scope for conversion. The garden is pretty and well laid out with plenty of well planted flower beds and protected at the front by a high box hedge.
Butleigh is surrounded by rural countryside, farmland and wooded hills. This popular village has a thriving shop and post office, an excellent pub, primary school and nursery and a very active cricket club as well as the “Drawing Room” tea room/café. Recently there has been a “Heritage Trail” retelling the history of the old properties within the village and all the stories that they have to offer.
For shopping, “Clark’s village” in Street offers a wealth of retail opportunities with more shopping and local amenities to be found in nearby Glastonbury, Somerton, Wells and Castle Cary. For further shopping and recreational activities, Bath, Bristol, Wells and Yeovil are all within about an hour’s drive. The A303 that runs south of Butleigh offers direct road links to London and the South west.
There are good rail transport links to London from Castle Cary railway station, (just about 20 mins drive), which offers an excellent direct rail service to London Paddington in less than two hours. Also, Airports in Bristol and Exeter offer connections within the UK, Europe and beyond.
Glastonbury is a town that is steeped in history going back to the legends of King Arthur. There was a Celtic monastery here in 500AD, which during the next 1000 years evolved into one of England’s wealthiest and influential Abbeys. The magnificent Glastonbury Abbey ruins and the famous Glastonbury Tor attract tourists to the town and so although small, it is a thriving town and it is well served by markets and a huge range of festivities. It is one of the few towns that has managed to shun many of the main chain stores whilst still providing all the necessary shops, restaurants, cafes, doctors, pharmacies, dentists, a wealth of clubs and sporting facilities and supermarkets.
Local independent schools include Millfield (which is very close), Wells Cathedral School, All Hallows and Hazlegrove prep schools and the various Bruton schools. State schools include St. Dunstan’s, Wells Blue and nearby Strode College
