Coburg is an interesting period house with a lovely garden, just a couple of minutes’ walk from Bruton high street. Its generous rooms have retained some lovely period features and offer scope for updating or reconfiguration. There is also potential, with the appropriate consents, to extend to the rear.
The front door opens into a brick porch and then into the hall where there are original quarry tiles and a pretty, turned staircase. To the front is a traditional dining room, with its original cast iron fireplace and elegant built-in cupboards and shelves either side of the chimney breast. Old, stripped floorboards are another lovely feature of this room. A large window looks out to the front. The sitting room has a cosy wood burning stove and bookshelves, and a tall window looking through to a sunroom at the back. The light and sunny kitchen is dual aspect, with a lovely view up to the dovecot on the hill. It is fitted with old oak cupboards, with space for a cooker and appliances, and there is a breakfast bar in the middle. An archway leads through to a little sunroom, a pretty room with a flagstone floor and tongue and groove panelling, and French doors opening out to the terrace. Potentially the kitchen, sunroom and sitting room could be opened up together to make a large kitchen/dining room, maximising the southerly aspect and overlooking the garden.
The staircase has three turns up to the top, where a light and very spacious landing leads to two particularly generous double bedrooms and a bathroom. Each of the bedrooms features a chimney breast, where potentially a fireplace could be reinstated, and the bedroom at the rear has lovely views of the surrounding hills and the dovecot. The large bathroom is very sunny and light, with fitted cupboards and a shower over the bath.
The rear garden has two terraces leading down to a delightful secluded garden. With its south facing aspect, it enjoys both the morning and evening sunshine. From the terrace at the top, you can sit and enjoy the views across to the dovecot and St Mary’s Church tower. Steps take you down to a middle terrace, edged with pretty planting - the perfect spot for a table and chairs, and then down to a charming hidden garden with a pretty lawn, sheltered by tall trees and hedging, with cottage garden plants and silver birch, cherry and apple trees. Three useful timber outbuildings provide storage/potential home office.
A gravel drive at the front provides EASY parking for two cars and leads round to the side with a gate through to the rear garden.
Bruton has several well-known restaurants, pubs and bars including "At the Chapel" and "The Roth Bar" at the Hauser and Wirth Art Gallery. The town also has a doctors surgery, pharmacy, vet, post office, several mini supermarkets, fuel station and numerous independent shops. There are excellent local independent schools including King's School Bruton, Bruton School for Girls and also the excellent state owned boarding/day school, Sexey's Bruton. Bruton has its own primary school and in close proximity are Millfield, Hazelgrove and All Hallows.
Further shopping and recreational actives can be found in Frome, a 20 minute drive, with wonderful artisan markets and a plethora of restaurants and boutiques. The larger Cities of Bath, Bristol, Wells and Yeovil are all within an hours drive. The A303 provides a direct route to London via the M3 and there is a mainline rail service from Bruton to Waterloo and Castle Cary direct to Paddington.
From the one-way Bruton High Street follow the A359 towards Frome, along Quaperlake Street, up the hill and Coburg will be found on the right hand side immediately after the Bruton Unionist Club.
